The Dean Ween Group The Deaner Album

Published Oct 21, 2016
Going from funk to rock to jazz and back again, the first album from Dean Ween's eponymous solo project is a fun listen. Genre-hopping all over the AM radio dial, any song on The Deaner Album sounds like it could be a mainstream, decades-old hit — until you listen to the lyrics. The gleeful, stream-of-consciousness doggerel is nothing new to Ween, (the individual or the other, also eponymous band), but defies any search for deeper meaning. The simplistic, repetitive lyrics and the booty-shaking beats of this album camouflage the complex and layered melodies. This is music for alt-funk nerds to dance to in their rooms, which is a heart-warming thought, if not a pretty picture. (ATO Records)
