Published Oct 25, 2012Thao Nguyen spent some of her 2011 travelling North America to support her collaborative LP with fellow folkie Mirah, but the West Coast artist is now ready to get back to her full-time gig with her band, the Get Down Stay Down. The troupe's next LP is titled We the Common, and it drops February 5 via her new label home, Ribbon Music.
A press release explains that the 12-song set was tracked at San Francisco's Tiny Telephone Studios and Elmwood Studio in Dallas by producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Black Mountain, the Walkmen) and follows Thao with the Get Down Stay Down's 2009 LP Know Better Learn Faster.
On top of her own band, Nguyen brought in Joanna Newsom to duet with her on album track "Kindness Be Conceived." While that song is currently under wraps, Nguyen has shared new number "Holy Roller," a banjo-laden pop tune that you can stream down below.
The song was the first to be written for We the Common, and Nguyen noted the track marked a shift in her philosophy of life. "I was steadily, in an overdue way, becoming grateful for everything and everyone I had," she said in a statement. "I tried to capture a sense of revival and a determination to be better."
She continued, "We the Common is an album about wanting to be a human who tries and is grateful for the opportunity. It is about wanting to be better and closer to people. I have had over a year respite from touring and recording — in this year I started really trying to be a part of the community I live in and the family I was born into."
