Published Jul 18, 2019Representing Philadelphia, DJ Delish (aka Miss Boi) hit the scene in 2013 — a young, queer POC with a voice that is sorely lacking in this industry. Her love of vogue and ballroom culture in the LGBT/queer scene has certainly influenced her beats, and offers a bit of playfulness alongside a mix of hip-hop and house-inspired instrumentals, as evidenced by her latest release, XP.
The six-track album offers three instrumentals and three vocal tracks, and what becomes evident quickly is the weight the latter have. "Sandy" is a three-minute interlude, essentially, falling between the two best tracks on the album and monotonously rolling by. While it's not the most exciting, by any means, it does highlight the exceptional bookends, "Musical Chairs" and "Bring a Friend." The former falls right into vogueing territory, throwing out a slick, separated beat with snaps of snares that eventually gets tied in with round, bouncing synth.
DJ Delish drops in with her matter-of-fact verses, throwing shade at others in the ballroom circuit. While DJ Delish does have more than a few EPs and a ton of singles out there, XP is a great jumping point to explore. (Sweat Equity)
