All of the show's actors have officially been released from their contracts following a career shift for director David Fincher. It appears that Fincher's busy schedule and other projects are getting in the way of directing the Netflix series — which has yet to even be renewed for Season 3 despite its massive following and critical praise.
Netflix issued the following statement about the show's future on the platform:
David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots. He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn't fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.
The series is based on John Douglas and Mark Olshaker's 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit. It was initially developed as a show for HBO in the late 2000s, but the network ultimately passed on the project. It was eventually picked up by Netflix in 2015.
Season 2 stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv. It aired last August after Fincher and Charlize Theron dropped the first season back in 2017 — and after Netflix renewed the show for a second season just a month after its debut.
The series current holds a 98 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes — a sentiment that is being echoed in viewers' reactions to this unfortunate new development.
See some of those reactions below.
Is Netflix actually serious about this?? Pausing #Mindhunter season 3 and releasing the cast from the contracts all so Fincher can make a movie about screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz?? FFS pic.twitter.com/T05i94zmj5— NextFlicks (@NFlicks) January 16, 2020

Look, #Mindhunter is just really good TV, OK? It's well scripted, incredibly acted - the three leads are a godsend to that show! - and has a true sense of foreboding, dread, and horror clinging to every shot. Come on. Give us a season 3.— New Year, Same Inability To Do Name Jokes (@Rotshasa) January 16, 2020
